Синий карандаш. Во время Первой и Второй мировых войн письма с фронта домой подлежали цензуре. Сведения, которые могли бы передать военную информацию, вычёркивались синим карандашом. Говорят, что Lord Chamberlain — чиновник, занимавшийся цензурой драматических произведений, вплоть до 1968 г. исправлял текст новых пьес синим карандашом. Сейчас to blue pencil значит осуществлять надзор, а blue pencil употребляется как замена любого неприличного, нецензурного слова:
